How Node Context Powers AI Chat

The superpower of AI Chat in Tana is its native understanding of your personal data graph:
  • Start chat from a specific node: When you select a node (or group of nodes) and launch AI Chat, the full text, child notes, and property fields automatically form the grounding context for the chat.
  • Summon nodes using the @ symbol: While chatting with AI, type @ followed by the name of any book, note, contact, or article. AI immediately reads the referenced node to inform its answer.
  • Trace citations via star indicators: When AI references notes from your Tana vault, a small star icon appears beside that sentence. Click the star to open the canonical source note and verify context.

Open the AI Chat panel

  • Place your cursor at the node you want to work on.
  • Press Ctrl + K (or Cmd + K on macOS) and type Chat (or click the AI Chat icon in the toolbar).

  • If you need to reference external notes in your vault, type @ and pick the target node (for example: @Atomic Habits or @Career Map).
  • Grounding AI with real notes prevents hallucinations and keeps responses anchored in your authentic data.
